A simple, inexpensive brooding method.


 


These mats are used to keep young chicks at the right temperature while they are being handreared and kept in a brooder box.

 This product has been specifically designed for providing heat in vivariums for reptiles, terrariums for frogs, hermit-crab set-ups or any enclosure that requires floor heating. It is also used for brooder set-ups for young chicks from the age of 2 weeks old.

In the case where the heat mat is used as a brooder for chicks it is important to remember to keep the mat on the side of the brooder in an upright position, so the chicks can move away from the heat source.

  By doing this the chicks can regulate their own body temperature (by moving to or away from the heat mat). For this reason you don't generally need a thermostat to brood the chicks. When the chicks are cold they huddle together and when they are warm enough they spread out. The 20W mat runs to about 55 Celsius, depending on your choice of brooder will determine whether you will need to use a thermostat. The less airflow your brooder type has, the more need for a thermostat. In the case of the cardboard boxes, it isn't necessary as there is plenty of airflow.

This mat can be used in different brooder types, whether you use an aquarium, plastic boxes, eskies or cardboard boxes. the main thing to remember is keep the mat in an up-right position. This can be done by firstly slipping the mat inside a strong plastic bag, (the type you get from cereal boxes are adequate) to keep the mat clean, and then taping the mat with sticky tape in an upright position on your preferred brooder box. Cover the brooder box with a cloth to keep the warmth and wood shavings in the brooder.
